Q&A with (virtual) Genarlow Wilson

How he is adjusting back into normal life

Genarlow Wilson was recently released from jail after serving 32 months for receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old while he was 17. Wilson, originally charged with 10 years in prison, drew attention from across the country because of the excessive punishment. Today, he is trying to settle back into a normal lifestyle and took a few moments to talk with us.

Impeached Magazine: Hey Genarlow, thanks for talking with us.
(virtual) Genarlow Wilson: Sure, no problem.

IM: Tell us, what was life in prison like?
VGW: Man, its tough. Being a prisoner like that and basically having no freedom is very disheartening.

IM: When you were in jail, did you ever get discouraged or angry at your situation?
VGW: Well, yea. Every day was a struggle, but when times got tough I would just look at my Live Strong wrist band and think, 'What would Lance do?'

IM: So that's how you got by?
VGW: For the most part. Plus all the other prisoners were really good about getting me weed. That stuff can really calm you down.

IM: Basically you went to jail for receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old. Was it worth it?
VGW: Yes.

IM: Care to elaborate?
VGW: No, but it was good.

IM: You were in jail for almost 3 years. How have things changed since then?
VGW: Well what hasn't changed? I mean when I went in 3 years ago, the world was a different place. Then it seemed like a lot of people had cell phones. Now I think most people do. That's still odd to me. Plus, music was better back then. They just don't make 'em like they used to.

IM: What went through your mind when you found out you were going to be free?
VGW: Thank God I will be out in time for Halloween!

IM: Really? Why Halloween?
VGW: Man, have you ever been trick-or-treating? You get so much candy, it's crazy! In jail, you don't get nothin'.

IM: What was your costume?
VGW:
I went as a prisoner. I already had the costume.

IM: So, do you ever talk to that girl any more?
VGW: I try, but she's not interested. Said she just can't be with someone who's been in jail. I told her she put me there and so suck it up, but she doesn't care.

IM: Suck it up?
VGW: Um, yea bad choice of words.

IM: Would you say receiving oral sex from her was a bad choice?
VGW: No, not at all. Filming it was. But, I mean, we were just trying to have fun, not start a civil rights movement.

IM: So what's next for you?
VGW: Hopefully college. Maybe play a little football.

IM: What school? BJU?
VGW: What?
IM: You know Bob Jones University.
VGW: I don't know, I want to go somewhere I can play ball at.
IM: You should really consider Trojans.
VGW: Southern California?
IM: Uh, yea that's what I meant.

IM
: So tell, me is it true that everyone gets raped in prison?
VGW: Well, I don't know if it is everyone, but you definitly had to watch your back.

IM: How did being raped compare to being with that 15-year-old?
VGW: Man, I never said I was raped.
IM: You never said you weren't raped.
VGW: Well I wasn't.
IM: Yea sure, you weren't. I understand (wink).
VGW: Really I wasn't.
IM: OK, I got it. You were not mercifully gang raped 3 times a week every week for the 3 years you were in prison (wink wink).
VGW: Man I should kick your ass. This interview is over!
